<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have been quiet on the blog front, but I couldn't pass up the 75th anniversary for the ending of World War 2. I'm currently researching 1943, and Victory Day is a long way away yet. The women's section in the newspapers for 1943 are encouraging the Homefront to live simply and not to spend on unnecessary luxuries. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In Australia, we have had some of our stay at home restrictions lifted for covid-19 but there is a long way to go before we return to normal. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SIDkd2Tt3c8/XrZwcZ0-65I/AAAAAAAAG30/O9zDlonRcSILYEKqGgMzH0es4XgYFgMLACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/sunshineyellowd.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="375" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SIDkd2Tt3c8/XrZwcZ0-65I/AAAAAAAAG30/O9zDlonRcSILYEKqGgMzH0es4XgYFgMLACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/sunshineyellowd.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So there are some happy times to speak about and rejoice in even if some restrictions remain in place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Like many, I don't think there will be a normal after covid-19. Many of us see the necessity in living within our means, making the home a viable place to rest in, and make sure we have all that we need to stay in and do our part at the Homefront.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3QHwUqrmXp8/XrZwlhELsZI/AAAAAAAAG4E/eRLFOKO20msWVvG9y-O5-j3CaoPzG-quQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/mint.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3QHwUqrmXp8/XrZwlhELsZI/AAAAAAAAG4E/eRLFOKO20msWVvG9y-O5-j3CaoPzG-quQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/mint.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When the war ended, the rations continued and they needed to live simply without expenses. The home was the place for many to be in. There was a survey of women at the end of the war and during the war asking women if they wanted to work or stay at home. A lot of women declared they wanted to be home, or have a home of their own. This of course shows how the 1950's home was born. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7dIwmCTgsac/XrZze57jyJI/AAAAAAAAG4k/V8BftfEI16Q1D9AMt-cPQR1qWrQ8rioLQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/nla.news-page8710190.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="665" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7dIwmCTgsac/XrZze57jyJI/AAAAAAAAG4k/V8BftfEI16Q1D9AMt-cPQR1qWrQ8rioLQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/nla.news-page8710190.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The advertisement from 1945 looks very much like it could be from the 1950's. With many women now declaring the home as their right place to be, this made the changes for the extravagance seen in the early 1950's home. While a lot of people believe that era to be far removed from the 1940's home, there were many similarities between both era's. The main one is, the home was the best place to be. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JnUPED0MhBw/XrZwhqpNFrI/AAAAAAAAG38/9l1osVqeSOMmNbyorAsaHzCWEe2Kk0mCACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/gardenc.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="375" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JnUPED0MhBw/XrZwhqpNFrI/AAAAAAAAG38/9l1osVqeSOMmNbyorAsaHzCWEe2Kk0mCACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/gardenc.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">And that is what it is like today, staying home as much as possible, making do with what you have, and being with family. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">Below is the Queen's speech for the 75th anniversary of V.E day.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope everyone is having a good day or evening, where ever you are. And staying home safe with loved ones.</div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mWMuwJNyVxU/XovhAoR8LZI/AAAAAAAAG2A/AoAN0t_6LwEjjZFwJc9zwGWCFlm_wVirACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/laundrylorea.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mWMuwJNyVxU/XovhAoR8LZI/AAAAAAAAG2A/AoAN0t_6LwEjjZFwJc9zwGWCFlm_wVirACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/laundrylorea.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In Australia we are in lockdown, shelter in place, stay at home, the only time to leave home is for essential shopping and exercise. As I mentioned I do my part to stay home when I'm not needed as a carer for essential driving. Now is the time to stay home, do what you can with what you have, and be kind to one another. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As I follow the wartime home front of the 1940's much of what is in the news today, seems to be what was happening then but for a different reason.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H1C_4i4ZLSc/XoviLDDbTVI/AAAAAAAAG2c/OoMjwXQNzyMd-ak8yFy3MkvWwLRjkI3AwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/flourless.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="421" data-original-width="600" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H1C_4i4ZLSc/XoviLDDbTVI/AAAAAAAAG2c/OoMjwXQNzyMd-ak8yFy3MkvWwLRjkI3AwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/flourless.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Focusing on the home and family is important for today, but also remember we are in anxious times. Not everyone can be productive in the home, many still work out side the home, have health issues, or are elderly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-57C54tvctPI/Xovl-5BEwHI/AAAAAAAAG28/UWJ3G3dJjGIetPcqYC4Jd8Ja-EeOSic-ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/mondayinspirationa.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-57C54tvctPI/Xovl-5BEwHI/AAAAAAAAG28/UWJ3G3dJjGIetPcqYC4Jd8Ja-EeOSic-ACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/mondayinspirationa.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Just focus on what you can do. Take the time to give yourself some leisure time too, remember we can still go for walks and do hobbies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NT6j_dTO8Zc/XovgwYWbMeI/AAAAAAAAG1k/RdmF515TrJYjY48EGIAVVzZxq-f49QmsgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/flourlessa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="241" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NT6j_dTO8Zc/XovgwYWbMeI/AAAAAAAAG1k/RdmF515TrJYjY48EGIAVVzZxq-f49QmsgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/flourlessa.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: justify;">It is a good time to prepare, even now. Make sure you have what you need without hoarding unnecessarily. Return to simple living as much as possible by doing: Home made, home cooked, home grown, and, home living.</span><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9W24W-acKlA/Xovms3l_JyI/AAAAAAAAG3M/MmehhNG3VSUWa7W2zSPR5PnEHnq8_Zk6ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/cottagejournaljuneb.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9W24W-acKlA/Xovms3l_JyI/AAAAAAAAG3M/MmehhNG3VSUWa7W2zSPR5PnEHnq8_Zk6ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/cottagejournaljuneb.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Returning to simple home living is a way to stay home in this time where it is expected we aren't doing 'unnecessary spending'. Not only that, it also means by supplying what we need at home we aren't putting on a strain on the lack of supplies available in the shops.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Keeping things simple is important. Focusing on 'plainer foods for health & energy' as the wartime advertisement says. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0LZiLG6VR_M/Xovgyv3WVzI/AAAAAAAAG1s/7KxtU-sWsb8kuguJDSiGgLUyI4AcX3mcgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/flourlessd.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="401" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0LZiLG6VR_M/Xovgyv3WVzI/AAAAAAAAG1s/7KxtU-sWsb8kuguJDSiGgLUyI4AcX3mcgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/flourlessd.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Return to meals that are 'economical', don't waste electricity, or time. Be prepared to use leftovers for second meals as this will save going out for more essentials and not be wasteful with food.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DsA5LdY1RMk/Xovl8Cd6oyI/AAAAAAAAG24/RA0vcE5MZHQ-bnJCkt9E-YoucONN5uYFgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/dinner.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="482" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DsA5LdY1RMk/Xovl8Cd6oyI/AAAAAAAAG24/RA0vcE5MZHQ-bnJCkt9E-YoucONN5uYFgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/dinner.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
With the shortages now, it is a good idea to start writing down alternatives you can use for cooking if you don't have or can't find the necessary items. Writing things down is important because the internet may not be available or with everyone home it will become slower and more difficult to navigate. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xE-VNKrppPY/Xovg3Bwc4_I/AAAAAAAAG10/W2x8XxCZgA05G2P0gkhcbn9LxpFtU91QwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/flourlessf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="646" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xE-VNKrppPY/Xovg3Bwc4_I/AAAAAAAAG10/W2x8XxCZgA05G2P0gkhcbn9LxpFtU91QwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/flourlessf.jpg" width="257" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Find out substitutes for eggs, and or, flour like this wartime recipe for 'flourless French cake' (if you click on the picture it will bring up a larger image). It does use flour but not the usual types of flour that is currently being limited to the amount everyone can buy, if they can find it. If you don't have yeast for bread there are other substitutes such as potato yeast or sourdough. You can also make dampers and scones, which don't use yeast. These are handy recipes to know because you don't have to use eggs or milk (substitute with water) as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Most of all, remember to keep calm and carry on (at home).</div>

Like everyone, I am self-Isolating with family and staying home as much as I can because I'm the designated driver for shopping essentials. While I'm at home I have been looking through my treasure trove of saved household hints, tips, and recipes. I thought I would start to share these along with the regular posts from the Wartime era. </div>

Many of these useful hints and tips are tried and tested over time, in today's world they still are relevant. The useful hints and tips for today are all about gardening. As always these are frugal tips and won't cost you the earth and many of the items can be already found at home.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The weather is changing into our Autumn and the days are becoming a little bit cooler and we're still have rain as well. All in all a very good time for the garden if you have one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5T_tAyxJmAA/Xm9Rhb2S36I/AAAAAAAAG0M/qgndrMsz7OE87qEh7i923pIofJNDdePSwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/tomatohot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="560" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5T_tAyxJmAA/Xm9Rhb2S36I/AAAAAAAAG0M/qgndrMsz7OE87qEh7i923pIofJNDdePSwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/tomatohot.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In the wartime letters there is talk about tomatoes growing even though they were experiencing a bit of a heat wave and nothing else was growing in their gardens. Tomato recipes were also included in the kitchen section. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lpK6LGfon98/Xm9RjMKPefI/AAAAAAAAG0U/QCVkjRsYktAZXJmPzCZI3iqMp-UNhlM1QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/sunshineb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="375" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lpK6LGfon98/Xm9RjMKPefI/AAAAAAAAG0U/QCVkjRsYktAZXJmPzCZI3iqMp-UNhlM1QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/sunshineb.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
There is still a lot of talk of saving and making do. I'm currently saving a lot of orange peels to use in potpourri crafts. During the war they wouldn't waste full orange slices for crafts. The peels were put to use in recipes like marmalades, and candied, if sugar was available.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HgImcrlqtcs/Xm9Rje-dLFI/AAAAAAAAG0Y/x448pFkE4a0Omm50Rv3YZNm9ZcyAL9tpgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/tomatoeb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="922" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HgImcrlqtcs/Xm9Rje-dLFI/AAAAAAAAG0Y/x448pFkE4a0Omm50Rv3YZNm9ZcyAL9tpgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/tomatoeb.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Savings were encouraged more often now and plenty of advertising gave the call to save for war bonds. The money saved was sent to the government to help with the war of the time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Even though there isn't a war to send savings to, it is still a good idea to put away the 'pennies' for the rainy day emergency. There's lots of ways to save a few dollars here and there, for myself I'm not thrifting which is a hard thing for me, but a nice thing for my savings purse. I'm also considering my no spend challenge again. Perhaps in April.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Also, for now I've turned off comment ability on my blog as sometimes it is just nice to look and not have to participate...well, I think so.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
I took a break from blogging after dealing with some personal issues. I thought by now I would be well settled into a new home, however drama happened and a move hasn’t occurred just yet. I usually refrain from posting in-depth personal setbacks and drama in detail on my blog so I’ll just move onto blogging.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-59KcFruY0dI/XmbJi-gEePI/AAAAAAAAGzo/v5jDEHB6BVg7lrrpVWMGFFSf2gq2ahVxwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/nla.news-page8690795%2Bcopy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="979" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-59KcFruY0dI/XmbJi-gEePI/AAAAAAAAGzo/v5jDEHB6BVg7lrrpVWMGFFSf2gq2ahVxwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/nla.news-page8690795%2Bcopy.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
The return to blogging is going to include the letters posted in Eleanor Barbour’s “Dear Eleanor Barbour” from the wartime newspapers. A lot of the ladies wrote in letters giving an account of their day to day life, what they were doing to make savings, recipes and home hints. The letters give a wonderful insight into the era for homemakers of Australia.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eEjM11BIZD0/XmbJg3wsJjI/AAAAAAAAGzc/2GHsd6w_aF4tl_ZGp_wMcRTY9HO8Z-44wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/homeausa.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eEjM11BIZD0/XmbJg3wsJjI/AAAAAAAAGzc/2GHsd6w_aF4tl_ZGp_wMcRTY9HO8Z-44wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/homeausa.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
As I continue with the 1940’s homemaking theme there will also include advertising of the time, as now coupons have become introduced to Australians and the adverts show how much something cost the average homemaker or if a coupon was needed to purchase the item. Without a coupon you could not receive the item. Australia had a lot of items available but things like the Nivea creme stopped being produced after 1939 due to it being a German product. English Yardley perfumes and creams became more popular to support the British and were widely available.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H5PI2HRpNew/XmbJhK-_qxI/AAAAAAAAGzg/M1j8d3oHg2ILHmejWWFkBsGBOtKb3TSDACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/homeausterityb.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H5PI2HRpNew/XmbJhK-_qxI/AAAAAAAAGzg/M1j8d3oHg2ILHmejWWFkBsGBOtKb3TSDACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/homeausterityb.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
As the war continues, many are still fighting with the Germans, for Australia the bombing of Darwin brought home the war and soldiers were also enlisted to fight the Japanese. Now more than ever, Australians were encouraged to help the war effort and send what they could to the war bonds. Austerity became the key focus of homemakers, spending less, making do, and travelling less developed into a major theme of the era. The homefront became important for many families and home made became a necessity. Home made meals were part of keeping a home and supporting the troops by spending less to save for war bonds.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7Z5hMGDADqs/XmbJjY2K3mI/AAAAAAAAGzs/Q3LPB_FcelkNBKHNx315GyoaeBbnmuhaQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/nla.news-page8690801.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1209" data-original-width="1600" height="301" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7Z5hMGDADqs/XmbJjY2K3mI/AAAAAAAAGzs/Q3LPB_FcelkNBKHNx315GyoaeBbnmuhaQCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/nla.news-page8690801.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
With the make do motto, I’m going back to creating items for the home using what I have and putting those items away for a future home. The main aim is to spend less and be at home when I can be. The advert above shows pillow cases were available and no coupons were needed. Transfers were also available and in keeping with the era but did not become very popular until the 1950's.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

With the state of the world today, all of this sounds very familiar. By posting the letters, the adverts, and continuing with a 1940’s lifestyle, I hope to pass on something useful for today’s homemaker.</div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yzyI4_G1Fbg/Xg7mTig4zVI/AAAAAAAAGxQ/UOKorfQb4LEWz3JLz6LU96QMcxljxDfKwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/1943newyea.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="390" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yzyI4_G1Fbg/Xg7mTig4zVI/AAAAAAAAGxQ/UOKorfQb4LEWz3JLz6LU96QMcxljxDfKwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/1943newyea.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The new year has come and gone. It was a quiet one at home, our town didn't have fireworks due to the fires around Australia and the drought we are currently facing. Many people feel like 1943 seems to be a long time ago, but if you look around there are still reminders of that time. How they lived then isn't too far removed from now, there were phones, cars, television, radios, and other modern cons. They were anxious and had sad moments of course, but they learn how to move on and made do with what they had. In today's time there are many who are trying to do the same.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As the world moves into 2020, I'm moving into 1943. World War 2 is continuing and Australian households are facing a necessity to tighten spending habits to give money to war bonds and so that the government doesn't have to force people into harsher rations. Coupons are in full use for most items and many of the advertising of the day such as this ad for LUX washing powder encourages the use of being thrifty and taking care of clothing items so they last longer and coupons weren't used wastefully.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I4s2fkwNsh8/Xg7mgmkLQ7I/AAAAAAAAGxg/YlVqCcMf1G8Ckno3SbiPQLIIGP0X3foggCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/newyearsc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="251" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I4s2fkwNsh8/Xg7mgmkLQ7I/AAAAAAAAGxg/YlVqCcMf1G8Ckno3SbiPQLIIGP0X3foggCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/newyearsc.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Many of the articles in the newspapers are now talking about saving, being careful with money, and making do. The government of the time is asking people not to spend and instead find ways to put pursuits to wartime efforts instead. For those on the Homefront, that meant making sure the home was presentable and meals ready for those who were working outside of the home and doing late shift work for the war.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ByCb5mwU1F0/Xg7pSBGavHI/AAAAAAAAGyM/7yX7EFj97Z0twPoulsXnca0D7mNQfjDAACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/newyearsb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="166" data-original-width="300" height="221" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ByCb5mwU1F0/Xg7pSBGavHI/AAAAAAAAGyM/7yX7EFj97Z0twPoulsXnca0D7mNQfjDAACLcBGAsYHQ/s400/newyearsb.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Many of the recipes of the day included very simple, quick, thrifty meals, for those who were watching how they used their coupons. All of this of course sounds very familiar as those of us who are doing it hard and trying to find ways to simplify, live simply, and spend less.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cssO34BHY_I/Xg7mVBnD8kI/AAAAAAAAGxU/nROOGy6U0xo257Gc_mn7SxhXeByNYJ6PQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/newyeara.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cssO34BHY_I/Xg7mVBnD8kI/AAAAAAAAGxU/nROOGy6U0xo257Gc_mn7SxhXeByNYJ6PQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/newyeara.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm doing my bit for the 'war', by using things I currently have and making the most of those items. I recently made a Christmas stocking from this thrift store brought cross-stitch kit I brought for $1. The stocking also used up fabric scraps I had.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This will likely be the major theme this year, to use what I have. The letter from 'Mauve Delphinium' is just one of many written in Jan, 1943 to Eleanor Barbour. The letter sums up the way everyone was helping with their bit for the war to save as much as they could. I am planning to show more letters of the time because they are good example of what was happening in Australian Home-fronts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As the war continues into 1943 the homemakers of the time are finding ways to be more thrifty to do their part for the war. This year, I will continue to follow along as they did, it may not be exactly the same as they live because I'm not trying to be a re-inactor. I'm trying to learn how they lived and take away parts I can use in my own life to make my life more thrifty too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
DEAR “A PEACEFUL HOMEMAKER” READERS,</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Today is Christmas day for us in the Southern Hemisphere and in the next week we will have New Year’s Day. Like my 1942 counterparts we are all wondering what the next 12 months will bring to us. The last year has taught me many things as I attempted to live like 1942. It has taught me that I can do without luxuries which are considered necessities and unattainable during 1942. Living like 1942 has taught me that I can manage with a limit to my clothes, sugar and tea. The 1942 ethic of Australian of the time has shown me they sacrificed a lot to help their country to save that country and its people. The Austerity living didn’t deter those to lend their bit to “Save their all”.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UF326aaCqvY/XgKfwiX9fAI/AAAAAAAAGws/SZ5KFDJU9TAJgfEl_AMbOcH6UTIjn70ZQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/wartimekitchene.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="186" data-original-width="385" height="309" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UF326aaCqvY/XgKfwiX9fAI/AAAAAAAAGws/SZ5KFDJU9TAJgfEl_AMbOcH6UTIjn70ZQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/wartimekitchene.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
While researching the time period of 1942 I realise it had been a sad one for many. You cannot have war without sadness and 1943 will bring more of it as the war of the time goes on. 1942 reflects much of what is current today with most of us struggling on the homefront and times are hard.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica; text-align: start;"> Even during the difficult times many of us are learning to live simply and make do like our 1942 folks. We are still keeping the home fires burning, preparing meals with less money, making do with less things, and hurrying to keep up with the housework while we also have jobs to do outside of the home.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica; text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Next year, no doubt, looks like it will be a continuance of the work of the last year, and perhaps even more intense. For myself, my vintage life will continue while I wait to go into my own home. I will continue this blog taking it now into 1943 to follow the homefront of the time to see how they continued to live under the hardships of world war 2. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
There won’t be another issue of “A PEACEFUL HOMEMAKER” until after the New Year, so let me now wish you all the best that the year has in store, and a very merry holiday for Christmas day.</div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FauLCPx3Olg/Xb_pa--oB8I/AAAAAAAAGvk/0-D1hnNHhlg7Lvbdn2ZSZnZxCJ4CaR_YQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4025.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="387" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FauLCPx3Olg/Xb_pa--oB8I/AAAAAAAAGvk/0-D1hnNHhlg7Lvbdn2ZSZnZxCJ4CaR_YQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_4025.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I wasn't planing to place this blog on hiatus, but for now I know I have to while other more important things require my attention. Trying to maintain a home blog is impractical when you have to actually pack up and move into a new home! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Our current place is up for sale and we made the decision to move on after nearly 4 1/2 years in this place. We could have resigned another lease but the thought of people coming in and out for house viewings, and on a month to month lease, wasn't an ideal way to live. So it is move we must. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I sort of see it as keeping with my 1940's study as we will be with an Aunt until we find a place so I suppose you could say I've been billeted out as an <span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(84, 84, 84); color: #545454; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;">evacuee, </span>like<i> Joyce ( in the book they changed her real name to suit the era. Her real name was Tracey) </i>from the wartime kitchen and garden series! The hardest part is packing everything up for storage to only keep a few craft supplies out to keep me a bit sane. Obviously the crazy quilt is going to be worked on...who knows I may even get it finished in time for a new home.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So for now, I wish all my readers well and have a good day or evening where ever you are. Eventually I will resume blogging at a later date.</div>

The farm life quilt: 1942<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
While reading through the newspaper articles from 1942, I came across a request from "Sour Grapes'"who asked for the patterns of the farmyard quilt and I thought I would look through the archives to see if I could find those particular patterns.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It took a bit of searching, but I did find it in older archives and I printed the entire set of patterns out.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Following the guidelines suggested for the quilt blocks I cut out my fabric. As every one now should be aware of, I do things frugally and these white blocks came from an old sheet. I'm planning to use the <a href="http://apeacefulhomemaker.blogspot.com/2015/03/crayon-tinted-embroidery-introduction.html">crayon tinting method</a> to make up the blocks.</div>

Each of the blocks in the quilt alternate with a cornucopia as the pattern. I'm thinking of making my alternate blocks crazy quilting as I have a lot of pretty cottons I can use on the blocks which keeps in with the 'make do and mend' of the era.<br />

As you can see, "Knitter" replied to "Sour Grapes". The other quilt patterns "Knitter" mentioned I have also printed out and there is a three little pigs quilt too. All these were printed in newspapers from around 1932-33.</div>

A lot of the patterns from the war era have always been knitting of some kind but to see quilts mentioned is interesting and I am sure too there will be a lot more embroidery patterns available as this is when the tea towel and pillow slip embroidery came into fashion again.</div>

<br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">Light Hands, Light Scones.</span></i></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Scones are as simple as ABC to make. A proper scone maker will tell the first lesson for the cook who says they are never able to turn out a decent scone is to remember scones need lightness. They are not like bread, where you have to roll and roll, and then knead and knead. And wielding flour will never turn out a fluffy scone. A good solid scone, maybe, but a scone that has lost all chance of lightness before it reaches the oven.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
The secret of a scone is they must literally be tossed together, and quickly into the oven with a light hand (and light heart, too, if you can manage it), and the oven must be very hot. The whole process of mixing and cooking need only be around ten or twelve minutes. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Scones are the next best thing to a cake that requires a lot of sugar and that they require very little in way of ingredients also makes it a top list for the wartime Austerity meal of 1942. Scones can vary in plain, sweet, or savoury.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Add about half a cup of grated cheese to two cups of flour, you can also make up onion scones, which are tasty even if the name doesn’t suggest so. Here is the recipe:<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><b>Two large cups self-raising flower, 1 tablespoon butter, 1 cup grated cheese, 1 beaten egg, 1 small very finely chopped onion, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and about 1/2 cup milk. </b></span><b style="text-align: center;">Sift flour and salt, rub in the butter and mix in the cheese and onion. Mix to a soft dough with the egg and milk, roll out and cut into usual shapes.</b></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: center;">
<b>Bake about 10 minutes in a very hot oven.</b><br />
<b><br /></b></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">GLYCERINE AS A COSMETIC</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l2wtnslly-o/XXdtDF_KsXI/AAAAAAAAGo4/-l3SeHAOgzYkYtUynLSb-Ql7IA4txuJlwCLcBGAs/s1600/vintagebeaa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l2wtnslly-o/XXdtDF_KsXI/AAAAAAAAGo4/-l3SeHAOgzYkYtUynLSb-Ql7IA4txuJlwCLcBGAs/s1600/vintagebeaa.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; text-align: justify;">It is worth knowing pure glycerine is valuable as a cosmetic . It has a wonderfully beautifying effect when used on the skin and as the benefit of whitening and softening any rough dry sky to make it supple. When using glycerine it shouldn’t be used as in a concentrated form. </span><br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Glycerine has special interest for a beauty regime because of its property of softening the skin, but also for its capacity for fading discolouring, so that it acts a s a beautifier in the true sense of the word. A tablespoonful of it in a pint of water - or rosewater or, witch hazel- will soften and protect the skin from the air. It should be rubbed in, but not wiped off. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Lotions containing glycerine agree with most cases of dry skin, and often combined with other beauty ingredients for wrinkled skin, blackheads, chapped lips, and sunburn. Pure glycerine has a powerful, beautifying effect on the skin.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-REqxsEF3r6Q/XXdtECoODMI/AAAAAAAAGpE/wt4qdNa2lDklNlVfKYjlBHEcWtU4Co5WgCLcBGAs/s1600/vintagebead.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-REqxsEF3r6Q/XXdtECoODMI/AAAAAAAAGpE/wt4qdNa2lDklNlVfKYjlBHEcWtU4Co5WgCLcBGAs/s1600/vintagebead.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Glycerine is a substance which may be used instead of oil and has the advantage of being more cleanly effective to the skin. It is more emollient than oil, and softens bodies without greasing them. A cupful in a bath of warm water will have a fantastic effect upon the skin of the body.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Glycerine having the property of absorbing water, uses up the moisture which the skin requires, and there-fore, should be diluted.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Those who want to try glycerine can do so by mixing in a little glycerine with the cold cream or lotion that they regularly use, but be sure to use only pure glycerine. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>To summarise, here are some of the virtues of glycerine:</b></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<b>1:</b> It renders the skin soft, velvety, and supple.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<b>2:</b> It is an antiseptic.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<b>3:</b> It is the only cosmetic which softens without greasing.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<b>4:</b> It is more emollient than any oil.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<b>5:</b> It contains amazing preservatives qualities when applied to the skin, and acts as a veil against wind, heat, cold, and burning rays of the hot sun.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<b>6:</b> It has a tendency to dissolve blackheads and such.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<b>7:</b> It imparts to the skin softness, smoothness, and suppleness.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<b>8:</b>It is a great substances for curing chapped skin.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<b>9:</b> Used as a cleansing cream or lotion, it acts as a protector and beautifier.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<b>10:</b> It does not evaporate or dry out, nor turn rancid, nor decompose as almost cold creams do, and when added to them, prevents those preparations from doing so.<br />
<br />
<i>(<b>Note: </b>I used rosewater essence as I couldn't find true rosewater. And I didn't have fresh roses to make rosewater. You need to use quite a bit of the rosewater essence to make up for the substitute.)</i></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We've had some lovely Spring like days here at the moment and it makes for nice weather to be into the kitchen cooking. I found this recipe called: foam biscuits, and thought I'd give it a try. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The recipe it self is very basic and the original didn't give an oven time as I suppose they expected everyone to know how to bake a biscuit (cookie) in the type of oven they had. This was a time when people still had wood stoves and some had gas stoves and some had the new electric stoves.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><u>FOAM BISCUITS:</u></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b>Recipe: </b>Take 3 cups plain flour. I cup of dripping. 1 cup of sugar. 1/2 cup milk, level teaspoonful Bi-carb. soda. Boil milk and sugar, then add soda and stir well. Let foam and cool. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

Rub dripping well into flour, add cool foam mixture and mix well. A cup of cocoanut can be added if liked. (I never added cocoanut to mine)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
You can roll dough out and cut out with a cookie cutter or pinch off a piece of balled up dough and press down with a fork on a well greased baking tray. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I baked mine in a moderate oven of 200 degrees for 15 mins or until golden brown.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Let cool slightly on tray and turn out on wire rack to cool fully.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
These biscuits can also be iced if you like. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Because this recipe uses very little ingredients it was popularly added to 'Austerity recipes'. Although the war is still in early days and a lot of things have yet to be rationed and given coupons. Come December sugar will be rationed to 1 pound per person per week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have also seen this recipe in earlier newspaper articles as late as 1920's and right up to the '30's. It isn't a recipe specific to wartime cooking of the '40's, like say SPAM recipes of the time.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-karjulGxDpk/XW2-BELm9MI/AAAAAAAAGoI/sTe5rE7rxcQ1OAoucx8z6P-gMLyk2R1wgCLcBGAs/s1600/foambisa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-karjulGxDpk/XW2-BELm9MI/AAAAAAAAGoI/sTe5rE7rxcQ1OAoucx8z6P-gMLyk2R1wgCLcBGAs/s1600/foambisa.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This is what the milk, sugar, and bicarbonate soda looks like when brought to the boil. The biscuits get the name foam biscuits from the fact the bicarbonate soda foams up.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XO55knucEJo/XW2-CPCt2eI/AAAAAAAAGoM/VMmi8zJtMaoyabEHnolnMh_r3kRb15rKQCLcBGAs/s1600/fomabisc.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XO55knucEJo/XW2-CPCt2eI/AAAAAAAAGoM/VMmi8zJtMaoyabEHnolnMh_r3kRb15rKQCLcBGAs/s1600/fomabisc.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The foamy mixture is then added to the flour and dripping mix and stirred up well. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iGn_e6K0PuA/XW2-FFYVuPI/AAAAAAAAGoU/0tmOLkOL9FQ91_b8CduXPAqRIyNDeQxuQCLcBGAs/s1600/foambisd.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iGn_e6K0PuA/XW2-FFYVuPI/AAAAAAAAGoU/0tmOLkOL9FQ91_b8CduXPAqRIyNDeQxuQCLcBGAs/s1600/foambisd.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The finished recipe is a simple home style biscuit which can be fancied up with icing and sprinkles. If I had balled my dough up smaller I would have gotten a lot of biscuits from this recipe which makes it very frugal recipe.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm no cook, but I'm learning as I go and I think these are very easy to make.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">My it has been a while since I last posted. With Spring approaching it is time to dust off the blog and start again. I’ve read a lot of articles and tried out many recipes while searching through the newspapers of 1939. The idea was to find out how they lived before the war and the restrictions on homemakers of the time. I used newspapers from Australia to get a good sense of what ladies (and possibly men) were doing during that time. Of particular interest were all the letters to Eleanor Barbour, the section gave a very good insight into homemaking and personal pursuits of the time.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As September approaches war will be announced and I have chosen that time to move on from 1939 and into 1942. I’ve specifically chosen this time as the Japanese bombed Darwin and suddenly the war that was over there, was now on our own doorstep. 1942 was a time when coupons were enforced and a call to Austerity was asked from Australia’s Prime Minister: Mr John Curtin. The call for everyone to do one’s part for the war began and this is the time when planting the garden for kitchen use was encouraged. </div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-146HbhVln_s/XWb94HqK6QI/AAAAAAAAGnY/jsOzGNEJotAGRZ0VDgBEh9fU79TH8dJzQCLcBGAs/s1600/nla.news-page20414320.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="459" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-146HbhVln_s/XWb94HqK6QI/AAAAAAAAGnY/jsOzGNEJotAGRZ0VDgBEh9fU79TH8dJzQCLcBGAs/s1600/nla.news-page20414320.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Surprisingly a lot of words used for encouraging austerity in the home are in current use today: Simpler living, less spending, restricting unnecessary spending. As the Prime Minster said: <i>“If you don’t stop spending we’ll have to ration everything.”</i></div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I move into 1942, home life will have less choices and basic recipes will be back in use. The war meant many companies turned their factories over to war use and shop brought favourites were not available. This encouraged the use of home made, home grown, home baked, in many Australian homes.</div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The housewife of the time was asked to budget and find ways to cut back on spending. Many were told to share their ways of cutting back, saving time, and saving money. This all sounds familiar as I've been doing this all along and I know many who also do the same thing.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4eh9VqRprzQ/XWb92_eYZdI/AAAAAAAAGnM/6G4j69BbQYo_N2TfKAUhRoqWliOn3KSUgCLcBGAs/s1600/austerityd.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4eh9VqRprzQ/XWb92_eYZdI/AAAAAAAAGnM/6G4j69BbQYo_N2TfKAUhRoqWliOn3KSUgCLcBGAs/s1600/austerityd.jpeg" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The home life of 1942, was all about making do with what you have and using basic home items to make the things you could not buy or should not buy. As one newspaper article wrote: <i>It is about rediscovering the enjoyment of simple pursuits.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HCPOi-sCSO4/XWb93Dcg5fI/AAAAAAAAGnQ/N3cmMz87fw4VZTnSBiiHqjXMvys9Mj2ngCLcBGAs/s1600/austeritye.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HCPOi-sCSO4/XWb93Dcg5fI/AAAAAAAAGnQ/N3cmMz87fw4VZTnSBiiHqjXMvys9Mj2ngCLcBGAs/s1600/austeritye.jpg" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
With the encouragement of the austerity campaign in homes of 1942, this was also the time when home gardening was requested. Flower patches were turned over to vegetable production and the encouragement of the victory garden began. With that in mind, my own garden is undergoing a change to the 1942 gardens of the time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This era feels very familiar and I am sure it will be to many others who follow a simple, frugal, life.</div>

<br />A Peaceful Homemakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08540234258195815071noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2875921112597577272.post-58058933787626370572019-05-18T20:53:00.000-07:002019-05-18T21:56:25.182-07:0040 vintage ways to cut costs<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Vintage living is renowned for having a life-style based on frugality. Adapting the rules from a no-nonsense era can stretch today’s dollar and cut household costs. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
As I continue the year of living like 1939, I can hardly be anything less than a careful housekeeper. The suggestions that follow are all I have learnt so far.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-47lD_XT9EQA/XODQHukL-EI/AAAAAAAAGjI/5_yj5V8a2XQGl-PIVfJp57Dxnh4r1gULQCLcBGAs/s1600/vintfrugald.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-47lD_XT9EQA/XODQHukL-EI/AAAAAAAAGjI/5_yj5V8a2XQGl-PIVfJp57Dxnh4r1gULQCLcBGAs/s1600/vintfrugald.jpeg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
1. Grow as much food as possible to lower the food bill, and freeze or can what you can’t use immediately. Even tomatoes can be frozen and used in soups and stews.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
2. Save leftovers to make potato scones, soups, stews or fried vegetables.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
3. Sheets can be reversed to extend their wear, putting the top border at the bottom end of the bed.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
4. A sheet that’s worn in the centre can be put “sides-to-middle.” Cut it in half lengthways, seams the sides together and hem the raw edges.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
5. Turn back bedding in the morning to help keep sheets to stay fresh longer. Which will cut back on frequent laundering. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
6. Cleaners should be bought in the most economical size (not always the largest) and decanted into spray bottles. Use just a squirt instead of pouring out a large amount.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
7. Don’t use more laundry detergent than you need. If you don’t have a measuring cup, use a 470g jam jar (fill it halfway for a cup measure).</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
8. A slightly soiled wash may not need as much detergent as the manufacturer recommends.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
9. Towels need watching. At the first sign of weakening along the edge, take bias tape and sew it with strong thread on both sides. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
10. A ripped towel can be cut into squares for use as washcloths.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
11. Worn-out towels, cut into squares and bound together in four or five thicknesses, make good washable pot holders. Hem with binding tape and leave a piece at the end to make a little loop of tape to hang them up.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
12. Wash blue towels, sheets, pillowcases with your whites to brighten up the white wash. Of course, any new coloured items should be washed separately for a few times.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
13. Camouflage unremovable stains on children’s clothes with embroidery. Paint, rust spots, small rips can all be concealed with stitched flowers, a butterfly or a fish, using washable beads or old pearls for centres and eyes.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
14. Soap is said to harden with keeping. Buy it six months ahead and store. unwrapped, in the linen cupboard. It smells good too.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
15. Use soap holders to prevent soap being wasted.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
16. If your bath oil label suggests using two capfuls, then half a cap is probably just as good.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
17. You can get rid of paper table napkins, too. An inexpensive bangle for a serviette ring for everyone in the family and a hemmed square from a worn-out towel make free substitutes.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
20. Scrub the dirtiest spots on clothes first to cut down on the washing time.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
21. Boil only enough water for the cups of tea or coffee needed.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
22. Have everything ready before the kettle comes to the boil, turning off the heat as soon as the water is boiling.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
23. Use the minimum amount of water to cook vegetables. Add a tablespoon of water and a dab of butter to the vegetables, shake to coat, then cover and cook slowly.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
24. A properly insulated oven retains heat. Turn it off before dishes such as casseroles are quite ready.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
25. If the oven is already on, cook frozen vegetables in it. Put them in a covered casserole with a little water, butter, and salt, and cook for 39 minutes.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
26. Keep your mending up-to-date, or that pair of ripped pyjama pants will sit in the mending box until it’s been out-grown. Organise a mending or sewing circle among your neighbours, for one or two afternoons a month.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PIP7jhtIAdk/XODQGkAE3DI/AAAAAAAAGjA/GGr3Gg6vb2wT6CMzqAOIiryPmiVAu7kwwCLcBGAs/s1600/vintagfrugala.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="375" data-original-width="500" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PIP7jhtIAdk/XODQGkAE3DI/AAAAAAAAGjA/GGr3Gg6vb2wT6CMzqAOIiryPmiVAu7kwwCLcBGAs/s1600/vintagfrugala.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
27. Worn-out clothes should have zips, buttons and binding tape removed. The old binding is more suitable for mending older clothes, since new tape is stronger and causes more stress. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
28. A patchwork quilt uses up old clothes. Make a cardboard template about 20cm square, and cut squares from the better parts of old garments. Back the quilt with an old flannelette sheet and interline with an old swollen blanket. Pillow slips can be fashioned in the same way.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
29. Short dresses can still be used by buying or making a wrap skirt in a complementary colour to wear over the dress.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
30. Lengthen accordion-pleated skirts using a remnant of fabric lining. Unpick the waist. Make a circle from the lining by seaming together a strip 17 cm wide and hop measurement plus 5cm long. Stitch the circle tot he top of the skirt - this portion will be hidden by an overblouse or seeker - and make an elasticised waist.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
31. Hand-knitted sweaters are warmer and can be unravelled when outworn or outgrown. Wind the yarn loosely around a large book, tie the skein in several place and hand-wash.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
32. Sometimes there is enough fabric in a pleated skirt to make into another garment by unpicking and pressing out the pleats. The material can then be reassembled.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
33. Carry a notebook with your family’s current measurements. If you see an unexpected sale, you’ll be prepared.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
34. Jot down metres or wool requirements for a pattern. That way you won’t buy too much or too little.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
35. Thermal cot blankets can be saved and seamed together to make a bedsize blanket when the cot is outgrown.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
36. Bean sprouts are an excellent and cheap source of vitamin C. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
37. Worn-out sheets cut into handkerchief-chief size pieces are softer on the nose than tissues.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
38. Conserve heating oil or gas by keeping the thermostat about 19 deg C (66 deg F) during the day and turning it down at night. Better still, turn the heat off.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
39. Cook roast beef slowly to minimise shrinkage. Rub it with oil but no salt, and place on a rack in a shallow pan fat side up. Do no sear or add water. Cook, uncovered, in a preheated 150 deg C (300deg F) oven for 32 to 34 minutes per 500g (1lb) for medium.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br />
40. A clothes dryer can use up to 100 kilowatt hours a month; drying clothes on a line is free. Clothes can be partly dried in the dryer, then hung on a line under cover.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica; text-align: justify;">In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia is in autumn heading into winter, and the winter chill is very much here. For the garden the newspapers of 1939 say it is time to sow beds where plants such as quick-growing annuals are needed. Popular flowers during the era for planting now, include:</span><br />

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Every vegetable planted needs ample room to be able to grow into flourishing plants. Carrots, turnips, parsnips, and red beet should be planted from four to five inches apart. Seeds need to be thinned out from six to ten inches apart with a foot between rows. For general purposes onions will do well with four inches apart, with ten inches separating the rows; lettuce will need a foot apart and twenty inches will do for cabbages in rows two feet apart.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
It’s May and Autumn is starting to appear here with plenty of foggy days, crisp mornings, and a hit of frost on the ground during early morning times. The weather has been very foggy and rainy. The rain is nice for the garden. There have been fine days too and the days are cooler in temperature but not very cold, making most days really pleasant. The weather makes it a good time to be indoors pottering around.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; text-align: justify;">During May of 1939 there's articles for dishes from ‘left overs’.</span><span style="font-family: "helvetica"; text-align: justify;"> </span><span style="font-family: "helvetica"; text-align: justify;">The articles all suggests it worth having patience and a love for making something from nothing to make sure not a scrap is wasted in the kitchen so that </span><i style="font-family: Helvetica; text-align: justify;">pennies </i><span style="font-family: "helvetica"; text-align: justify;">can be saved. Below are just some of the tips from those articles for using your kitchen left overs.</span><br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">When The Food Overflows.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
It’s worth while for a cook to make use of using left overs as it helps with savings in the weekly account. Left overs can be used - not every other day, but often enough to make a savings. In the first place, it pays to get into the habit of planning meals so there isn’t really any left-overs to be had. Over time this can be managed and when scraps do appear obviously know what to keep and what not to keep. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Hoard The Gravy and The Sauce.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Cupfuls of gravy and white sauce from dinner, can be reheated with pieces of cold meat like chicken and the sauce is easily season well and served up with crips bits of toast sprinkled with parsley makes an easily made meal.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Chicken heated in left over brown gravy: to the gravy add a little curry powder and spoon-full of chutney, and it makes for a nice breakfast dish. Boil up some rice and the left over becomes something more substantial.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Hasty Curried Eggs.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Eggs are always a good standby for any left over dish for dinner or breakfast. If there’s white sauce or gravy on hand, curried eggs are a few minutes and can be made up easily when you don’t have time. Heat the sauce or gravy, thin it if necessary, and flavour to taste with curry, a tiny pinch of sugar, and just before serving squeeze some lemon in it. Hard-boil and egg, shell them, and halve them, and smother with the prepared curry sauce. Serve with toast. A variation is simply poach an egg, serve on toast and coat with the curry gravy. The same can be done with poached egg on a bed of rice and the sauce over that.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">A Spoonful of Gravy.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
* Try poaching eggs boiled in brown gravy. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
* Place an egg in a small greased ramekin dish, cover with gravy, and bake until the egg is set. If you have white sauce left over you can add breadcrumbs on the surface and grated cheese, and brown as the egg sets.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
* A rissole mixture can be moisten with left over gravy.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
* White sauce is good for mixing in with salmon patties.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
* And both gravies can enrich a stew or soup.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Everyone knows scraps of mashed potato are some-how always in the kitchen left-overs. They can be fried and made into covering fish pie. Left over mashed potato is also good for padding rissoles or fish patties. Add left over potato to a shepherds pie for a good family meal.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
You can make some potato puffs as well if you have dry cheese that can be grated. Mash a cupful of potato with 2 or 4 tablespoons of cheese, and salt and pepper to taste. You can include a spoonful fo chopped parsley as well. Then add about 1 cup fo self-raising flour, and mix the whole together with two beaten eggs and a little milk if necessary. At the end it should be like a cavelike mixture that you will drop from the spoon. Fry in very hot oil until puffy and golden brown all over. Drain well. Serve with bacon and tomatoes.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
When you are making up some sweet scones, try making up a batch of potato scones (biscuit) which can be made quickly with scraps of cold potato. Sift 2 cups flour with a good pinch of salt and 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and then rub into it a heaped tablespoon of butter. Thoroughly mash 2 cups cold potato and blend it thoroughly with the flour. Mix to a soft, scone-line paste with a beaten egg and milk, or with the milk alone. Roll and cut in the usual way. Bake for 10 minutes in a very hot oven. You can add some grated cheese to this as well.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Cauliflower left over?</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
When you buy cheese in blocks there’s always unavoidable scraps and the ends are always dry. Those ends are easy to grate, and really useful to have on hand. They can be grated into macaroni cheese. If you have cauliflower, cheese blends very well with it. Place the left over cauliflower in a greased pie dish and cover it with a white sauce, well flavoured with grated cheese, pepper, and salt. Sprinkle the top with breadcrumbs and grated cheese then dot with a few bits of butter on top. Bake until brown. </div>

* Rice left from curry will make a rice custard with the addition of eggs and milk. It won’t be as creamy as the usual rice custard but still tasty.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
* Use ends of jam in the bottom of the basin that holds steamed pudding.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
* An odd spoonful of jam goes well in a curry.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">

* Think twice before throwing out dry ends of bread. Bake them instead in a slow oven until pale brown and crisp right through, or lightly toast them. Then either roll them finely with a rolling pin in a bag and store them in an airtight jar where they will keep for several weeks, and always be available for coating fried foods, and other purposes. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0PrXkqNYEwY/XMI2zcMINWI/AAAAAAAAGfI/GP7jkRsCX3gdmpplO78zhNMARm1IoUtIACLcBGAs/s1600/dearellee.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0PrXkqNYEwY/XMI2zcMINWI/AAAAAAAAGfI/GP7jkRsCX3gdmpplO78zhNMARm1IoUtIACLcBGAs/s1600/dearellee.jpeg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
The newspaper articles of 1939 had sections which appeared regularly in the pages. There was always front-page news headlines, sections for husbandry, sports, and one of the longest regular section is the ‘Of Interest To Women’ section and the Dear Eleanor letters. Women from around Australia wrote to Eleanor telling of their home-life whether happy or sad and giving recipes as well as useful tips. Eleanor ‘wrote back’ at the top of the article writing about her adventures of the time and giving advice to the homemakers. The articles are really a good look at the true living standards of the era and as time progress Eleanor encouraged all homemakers to prepare for war.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Sroliqf2uLI/XMI21tlRUGI/AAAAAAAAGfU/mO0Z0e0JI64ovUlY-298oU2zev3sEezAwCLcBGAs/s1600/dearelleb.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Sroliqf2uLI/XMI21tlRUGI/AAAAAAAAGfU/mO0Z0e0JI64ovUlY-298oU2zev3sEezAwCLcBGAs/s1600/dearelleb.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
In the garden, I’ve been planting out what the garden articles of 1939 suggest for the Autumn season. Pansies, snapdragons, and English cottage garden favourites are being mentioned as popular plants to plant out now. I’ve also planted out the winter vegetable crop such as cabbage. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gykhc6L3Kx0/XMI4BZALVwI/AAAAAAAAGfs/ZiBbBtATP80e-knS7VHKr7o4tXunNB28gCLcBGAs/s1600/dearellef.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gykhc6L3Kx0/XMI4BZALVwI/AAAAAAAAGfs/ZiBbBtATP80e-knS7VHKr7o4tXunNB28gCLcBGAs/s1600/dearellef.jpeg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
In the kitchen, the recipes are changing for the seasons with hearty stews and soups. A lot of the herbs from the garden such as bay, sage, and thyme are coming in handy to add flavour to the meals.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vyHq_7hBPGA/XMI21YfS06I/AAAAAAAAGfM/nl_HzqpWUbUDI1Qqeq2FQ4U2xrOBIWF6wCLcBGAs/s1600/dearelle.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vyHq_7hBPGA/XMI21YfS06I/AAAAAAAAGfM/nl_HzqpWUbUDI1Qqeq2FQ4U2xrOBIWF6wCLcBGAs/s1600/dearelle.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
In the home, ‘make do’ is being put to good use as always. I’m making an apron from my scrap bag and the crayon tinted flowers I did previously will become the pocket for the apron. I’ve never made an apron, so this will be interesting learning curve. I’m also working on a Grandmother’s flower garden quilt using up scraps from the scrap bag and I’ve recycled a lot of old Christmas cards to make up the hexagon templates for the quilt. Of course, the crazy quilt continues. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
The weather is changing for the seasons and it’s been quite nice weather for Autumn. The colder weather will likely come in and the home-front will have to adjust to the seasonal change once again. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
No doubt, in the up coming articles from Eleanor Barbour and her readers will give plenty of tips on how to make the changes. Change is never easy but if you take little steps to prepare it does make the transition easier. Living a vintage life is all about changes, it’s not easy, but it is a better way to be. At least I think so.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
There has been a short pause in blog posts for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons for the length between posting was to cut back on my internet time. I’m still a heavy Internet user and separation anxiety is real, but my phone isn’t like a third arm extension any more. Cutting back gave me some experience in what was do-able with Internet expenses.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Using the library for books, magazines and such. I also find the cheapest books I can through the thrift stores and I very rarely have anything new on my bookshelves. The thrift stores are also my go to place for all craft material and home goods. </div>

I rarely use the dryer and only on days where it has been raining consecutively making it difficult to hang out clothes to line dry. We do have an indoor hanging rack for clothes but towels and sheets need a larger space.</div>

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
I’ve started to plant what I can to bring food in the kitchen. Now that it is going into early Autumn here, I don’t need to water as much but I do have to find a way to use less water. I’ve currently gone back to using a watering can and using house water that doesn’t have any food scraps in it to water the garden. </div>

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
In the garden I plant vegetables to season and what I know will be eaten in the kitchen. I also tried planting out some very old seeds to see if they will sprout and have some varying success with those seeds. I plant flowers, both edible and ones for show. The bees need both and the garden needs the bees. I also make sure to have a good supply of herbs to make plain meals a little more tasty. Basil, Chives, Mint, Parsley, Sage, Thyme are all good herbs to have on hand.</div>

When I am out and about I now bring a small lunch box and pack lunches anytime I cannot be home to have a meal. I avoid going to get take aways as much as I can. And I bring my own water.</div>

I recycle everything I can. If I think I can find a use for it I try to do something with the item. In the craft room I make junk journals and I cut up old clothes for crafting with. I re-use old shopping bags and don’t buy shopping bags.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
There’s so much more I do to cut back to save the pennies. This all sounds similar to the way of living frugal during days of hard times in modern life. Even as modern as this sounds, many of the articles in the newspapers and women’s magazines of 1939 discuss similar saving ideas. While the internet savings obviously wasn’t a part of those times, all other suggestions to cut back and save with in the homefront are part of the time. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
The 1939 timeline I am studying is carefree and without worries. It is late April, there’s articles for soups, autumn fruits, buying woollens, along with cold and flu remedies. But there’s a dark cloud hanging over the era with articles in the news of Germany’s advances and possible war. In 5 months time, war will be announced and the need to be ‘Frugal’ has a new urgency. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Living within your means is both frugal living and living vintage. Importantly, this way of living is a means to be prepared for hard times and it is a wise way to be.</div>

</div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
In 1939 the home was featured a lot in the woman’s articles of the day. Many tips were given on how to go about making the home attractive. One woman dressed her home in the same materials as she dressed her-self! She kept the background as simple and inexpensive as possible. Then changed accessories in the home. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Articles also talked about the benefits of changing the home view by moving furniture around. This is something I’ve been doing for years. It seems, ‘move-itis’ isn’t a new condition of the modern era. Accessories were the main feature of the articles and using what you had was an important part of making attractive changes to dress the home. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nq2lntLTx6M/XGs3Hw1uznI/AAAAAAAAGdU/wEfuwS33uRILJe_4RQ63AEVIlctGV-IagCLcBGAs/s1600/cottagejune.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nq2lntLTx6M/XGs3Hw1uznI/AAAAAAAAGdU/wEfuwS33uRILJe_4RQ63AEVIlctGV-IagCLcBGAs/s1600/cottagejune.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Lamps during the time were a popular feature and the writing suggested placing lamps where a person reads and try dividing lamps around the room at intervals to spread the light around. A lamp at the end of the lounge suite could be put on a tall stand, so light would cast down on the occupants of the lounge. if the stand has a lower shelf, a vase at the bottom or fancy pottery was suggested to make the arrangement attractive. At the time, there was a trend to break away from central lighting and scatter it as much as possible around the room.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UZOGs21Vqg4/XGs16b4gNMI/AAAAAAAAGco/FpKUdmYmiVUlIlpGpumsWX2IOgGAI1mrwCLcBGAs/s1600/welldressed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UZOGs21Vqg4/XGs16b4gNMI/AAAAAAAAGco/FpKUdmYmiVUlIlpGpumsWX2IOgGAI1mrwCLcBGAs/s1600/welldressed.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica;">Cushions were considered a must for a well dressed home, as they are today. They brighten up the home, and at the time they were available in many designs and colours to add cheer. Home advice of the time suggested it best to match or contrast with curtains. Make or buy them from rich variety of silks, velvets, or other fabrics, according to taste. The rule during 1939 for cushion fabric was: <i>don’t put cotton and silk fabric cushions in the same room as ‘One laughed at the other’.</i></span><br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
New table mats of the time were also put in place to make for an attractive home. Hand-Embroidered mats tucked away should be starched and brought out to add a new change.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Other ways to dress up the home during the era was to buy new nick-nacks, because they were inexpensive way to making the room bright and fresh.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica;">For the well dressed home, the changing of accessories and furniture in the home is as important today for the wise homemaker as it was then. The main emphasis is not to put out a lot of expense when making the changes but simply use what you have.</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"> </span> </div>

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rYXdI9aUhbc/XGdDiZcLsbI/AAAAAAAAGbk/WdOopxTwKzscGAi0l635W1P8fQ7I9dR7gCLcBGAs/s1600/quietlifea.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rYXdI9aUhbc/XGdDiZcLsbI/AAAAAAAAGbk/WdOopxTwKzscGAi0l635W1P8fQ7I9dR7gCLcBGAs/s1600/quietlifea.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
The corn from the garden has been harvested and used in the kitchen. This is a sign summer is over and it will be time to consider what to grow for early autumn.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
As I continue to study the year of 1939 it makes sense a lot of their recipes are seasonal and the newspaper and magazine articles follow the changes of the season. The housewives would do the same in their homes depending on where they lived and what their local season was like. Almost everyone had a hot summer and the menus of the time suited the heat. Nobody wanted to be in the kitchen cooking in the heat which introduced many salads and request for cold cuts recipes.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PDmmSwlkHJ4/XGdD8ttBeJI/AAAAAAAAGcA/QEVLAmesFucw8iUTTCcEPeWo2qS1Z5KxwCLcBGAs/s1600/quietlife.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PDmmSwlkHJ4/XGdD8ttBeJI/AAAAAAAAGcA/QEVLAmesFucw8iUTTCcEPeWo2qS1Z5KxwCLcBGAs/s1600/quietlife.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The study of 1939 seems an odd place to start. The depression of 1930 was still in effect and war on Germany had not been declared yet. People were living comfortably for the most part and there was no talk of being careful with waste or watching the ‘pennies’. I choose this time to see how people lived in a mostly quieter time before the war and when the depression seemed to be lessening. It is still early in the year with this study. I haven’t fully implemented a lot of what I have researched. This is more a start to making changes towards living more vintage.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ue6qpudcKdY/XGdDky80ctI/AAAAAAAAGbw/zfHpdrE_zNcEv4gHtTk5dQ7sy34t083jwCLcBGAs/s1600/eggplane.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ue6qpudcKdY/XGdDky80ctI/AAAAAAAAGbw/zfHpdrE_zNcEv4gHtTk5dQ7sy34t083jwCLcBGAs/s1600/eggplane.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
As the year moves on there is more planning now to grow as many vegetables as possible in the small space I do have. As I study more of gardening habits of the time I will also be looking at how to preserve the harvest. I’ve invested in a dehydrator and a waterbath canner. Next purchase for preserving the harvest is going to be a pressure canner. They did have both back then. The dehydrator they used the oven or had a drying screen which is something I’ll consider making as well.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">This study isn’t about wearing the clothes of the time or looking like they did back then. I’m trying to remove the distractions of our modern era and make a more old fashioned life for myself.</span> </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The small steps I am doing now may not look like much, in the end they will add up and help me live more like they did in the past. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">

The garden section from a newspaper article in early November of 1939 wrote: <i>Those who like variety in their vegetables and home gardeners who like to grow uncommon vegetables should take an interest in growing the egg-plant or Aubergine. </i></div>

I took up the suggestion and planted out a couple of plants. This can be done by planting out seedlings, which I did. Or sowing direct in the open ground, three or four seeds to the site and afterwards thinning to one plant. The plant likes warm temperatures and the seeds germinate in hotter weather and flourish better when the weather is warmer. I planted my egg plants next to tomato plants as they are of the same family and require the same cultivation methods. The plants produce a lot of fruit and it is best to keep the crop to five or six per plant. Any garden work around the plant should be very shallow as the roots of the plant are at the surface and can be easily damaging to the plant. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><u>The above recipe for Aubergine tomatoes reads:</u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
W<span style="font-size: x-small;">ash large ripe tomatoes and cut in half cross wise. Melt 2 tablespoons butter or oil in skillet, place the tomatoes in the cut side up and sprinkle with the following seasonings, 2 cloves of farce finely minced, 2 teaspoons sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and finely minced (chopped) parsley. Cover and cook slowly for 10 minutes. Garnish with sprigs of parsley and serve immediately with any kind of fish (or meat) course.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Egg-plant fruits are ready for uses as soon as they reach a good size, and while they have a glossy appearance. If dull, they are over-mature and seedy, and not very good for cooking with. To prepare for cooking, simply wipe with damp cloth and remove stem and calyx. It can be peeled or left unpeeled. Egg plant is a watery vegetable; if cut into thick slices, salted, and covered with plate with weight on top, some of the excess moisture will drain away.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
When frying egg plant do not cover the pan - slices should be crisp.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Cut unpeeled egg plant crosswise in thin slices. Coat light with seasoned flour, fry in hot butter until pale golden brown. Serve pipping hot as vegetable accompaniment with meat, fish, etc. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
For the right seasoning egg plant is best with: Basil, dill, garlic, marjoram, oregano, rosemary.</div>

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PDB1LChErYQ/XFwAhbqUEfI/AAAAAAAAGaU/Ar_1J2EOErQLT7bRFTTpsjtbiD6RMM-qgCLcBGAs/s1600/happyroadb.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PDB1LChErYQ/XFwAhbqUEfI/AAAAAAAAGaU/Ar_1J2EOErQLT7bRFTTpsjtbiD6RMM-qgCLcBGAs/s1600/happyroadb.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The 1939 lifestyle is moving into early February. The kitchen garden is slowly producing for the home with harvested vegetables and cut flowers from the cutting garden. The blooms don't have scent or not much scent but they are showy and remind me of the flowers seen in the embroidery of lazy daisy flower gardens with crinoline ladies and sunbonnet gals.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The newspaper articles continue to give advice for the kitchen garden and what should be planted for this time of year in Australia.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O7BuzH8ARII/XFwAgGLQpuI/AAAAAAAAGaE/-6MaueAWz6U2zW6qUVb9PO-OpPrxAnnMACLcBGAs/s1600/happyraoda.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="607" data-original-width="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O7BuzH8ARII/XFwAgGLQpuI/AAAAAAAAGaE/-6MaueAWz6U2zW6qUVb9PO-OpPrxAnnMACLcBGAs/s1600/happyraoda.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Living like it is 1939 and following the newspapers of the day is now a part of how I go about my daily home routine. I try to do a little of how they lived back then and keep to the old fashioned ways of the time even though the articles say how homes are now very 'modern' to help the housewife in her home making. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dO16Br7f9eU/XFwAhLAKC3I/AAAAAAAAGaQ/nQs6LfBD-d4AAKE5R8-vNGesn0TyU7ZdACLcBGAs/s1600/happyraodd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dO16Br7f9eU/XFwAhLAKC3I/AAAAAAAAGaQ/nQs6LfBD-d4AAKE5R8-vNGesn0TyU7ZdACLcBGAs/s1600/happyraodd.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The modern home of the 1939, especially the kitchen, allowed the homemaker more leisure time and the only thing that was considered missing was the dishwasher! Articles from the newspapers give plenty of leisure time instructions for crocheting, knitting, sewing, and embroidery. There is also a lot of advertising for movies to go to and radio programs to listen to. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0nTwtihPvl0/XFwAh8RDz0I/AAAAAAAAGac/_u0doRN4-4Mchp-RfDth8ZzjknXMNlXywCLcBGAs/s1600/happyroadf.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0nTwtihPvl0/XFwAh8RDz0I/AAAAAAAAGac/_u0doRN4-4Mchp-RfDth8ZzjknXMNlXywCLcBGAs/s1600/happyroadf.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The 1939 lifestyle is really about slowing down. Taking time to place a tablecloth on the table and preparing dinners for the table. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wrz6K4i5ipM/XFwAiXTRWqI/AAAAAAAAGa0/zP31pYUO7jwlJcCzdC112I_zRXQw83yLQCEwYBhgL/s1600/happyroad.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wrz6K4i5ipM/XFwAiXTRWqI/AAAAAAAAGa0/zP31pYUO7jwlJcCzdC112I_zRXQw83yLQCEwYBhgL/s1600/happyroad.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: justify;">The older home economic skills gives a wealth of knowledge that is still usable today and is still used either as it was originally done or more updated to suit today. The methods are practical, sound advice, and makes sense to use them when possible. </span><br />
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QAhF0YW5OlQ/XFwAiIqU6DI/AAAAAAAAGag/RNcdDCq3qug93aJLGAZOC4omG3uATqtMQCLcBGAs/s1600/happyroadg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QAhF0YW5OlQ/XFwAiIqU6DI/AAAAAAAAGag/RNcdDCq3qug93aJLGAZOC4omG3uATqtMQCLcBGAs/s1600/happyroadg.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
One of the practical methods was to follow a cleaning routine. It may take some time to pause and clean, or fold up items taken off the clothes line, or take out a dusting rag. But it really isn't any more time than scrolling through facebook or youtube. A few minutes of unplugging and slowing down to do the home chores is a step towards making a house a home and not just a place to live in.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F2vQwt1RN84/XFwAgyveuQI/AAAAAAAAGaM/vUmaOVVxcuMFXLTwODmcvcrbhL3QX59FwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_3010.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F2vQwt1RN84/XFwAgyveuQI/AAAAAAAAGaM/vUmaOVVxcuMFXLTwODmcvcrbhL3QX59FwCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_3010.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For me, I'll continue down the road of learning what I can to unplug, slow down, and use ways which seem to make better sense to me. I'm only just starting but now I'm down this road towards a more vintage life I feel this is the right way.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
A bad case of the flu meant a break in blogging posts. I also had to help with a family member who underwent a major surgery and that took up a lot of my time. It did mean falling off the 1939 living and going back to modern convineces of fast food. I'm now looking at using lunch boxes and making up meals for those times when I'm sick. After the flu hit I did go about and cleaned up the house, which was just as well because not soon after it was back and forth to the hospital for the family member who now is coming along fine after their surgery.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The February 1939 newspaper articles for the garden encourage mulching and staking up tomatoes, eggplants and dahlia's. And with the heat around there's advice to keep the watering up to the plants that need it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nxOC6sxlHao/XFS3h3NnYAI/AAAAAAAAGZs/FW2VIz71utkPdI32_H4FHq404LpquViSgCLcBGAs/s1600/feb1939f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nxOC6sxlHao/XFS3h3NnYAI/AAAAAAAAGZs/FW2VIz71utkPdI32_H4FHq404LpquViSgCLcBGAs/s1600/feb1939f.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had my first harvest from the garden and I expect more to come in as the plants grow.</div>
<br />

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fYcIjGglFV8/XFS1eGilYjI/AAAAAAAAGZY/D1t8LmsLeE81Xyj58Qt3wfUWSxxCWoChACLcBGAs/s1600/feb1939e.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="476" data-original-width="248" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fYcIjGglFV8/XFS1eGilYjI/AAAAAAAAGZY/D1t8LmsLeE81Xyj58Qt3wfUWSxxCWoChACLcBGAs/s1600/feb1939e.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
With summer in full swing and the heat soaring, many newspaper articles are giving out summer recipes or advertising meals useful for the heat. Arnott's Sao biscuits is advertised regularly and cordial drinks are popular. The cordial drink is probably not the healthiest but Cottee's is an old brand from the time of 1939.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vNXHHV7OZOk/XFS1c2J8ZLI/AAAAAAAAGZU/wubhtjuN9vAwVal0eJmDKCo1LphQeofigCLcBGAs/s1600/feb1939d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vNXHHV7OZOk/XFS1c2J8ZLI/AAAAAAAAGZU/wubhtjuN9vAwVal0eJmDKCo1LphQeofigCLcBGAs/s1600/feb1939d.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm looking through a lot of advertisements now and trying to find many of the brand names used for the time. Some brands are still around today but the original recipe for them has changed like the SAO biscuits. Their's were much larger and I remember as a kid the SAO's were larger and thicker than what they are now. The packaging from 1939 was also very different, they had a packet that let you cut through the packet and you closed it back up to keep the contents fresh. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I remember a while back SAO company trying to say they didn't change anything and the news found a lady who had a really, really, old packet stashed in her pantry she forgot about. Of course they compared the biscuit size and yes the company changed the size. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7iixyVSriSk/XDBvalOYZCI/AAAAAAAAGYw/tpcYT7LW_PwXdM0vVatb3QLHuTUN2chbACLcBGAs/s1600/homestarti.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="775" data-original-width="309" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7iixyVSriSk/XDBvalOYZCI/AAAAAAAAGYw/tpcYT7LW_PwXdM0vVatb3QLHuTUN2chbACLcBGAs/s1600/homestarti.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The articles for early January 1939 talk about the need to keep cool. Nothing much seems to change and the weather is still hot in 2019! The newspaper article for how to keep food fresh without an ice box is an interesting read. Depending on where you live refrigerators were advertised and many had them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The garden for January 1939 talks about keeping up with the watering during hot days, and to plant out celery. Now a days gardeners don't bother with the trench method, they blanch the stems when they are almost fully grown by wrapping cardboard or newspaper around the plant to exclude the light to blanch the stem. Blanching the stem of celery will make the plant less bitter tasting.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I've planted my celery out. I left them a little too long in the seed planter but they will bounce back. It is important to keep the water up to the plant.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm going back to old fashioned bar soap this week, instead of using liquid soap. I've chosen to go with the Lux soap as the brand is advertised more than Palmolive soap. I wonder if I will end up with a complexion as: '<i>lovely as Joan Blondell</i>!'</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PHCHHb3zSt8/XDBuS6GwaCI/AAAAAAAAGYc/k4NlfXFxI9I0pz4Oo2pxrsID1KyLfHdeQCLcBGAs/s1600/homestaredd.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PHCHHb3zSt8/XDBuS6GwaCI/AAAAAAAAGYc/k4NlfXFxI9I0pz4Oo2pxrsID1KyLfHdeQCLcBGAs/s1600/homestaredd.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The scrapbook I have for the newspaper articles of the time is starting to fill up with a wide variety of home and garden sections. There's a lot of things I can't do with the articles I do have due to the obvious reason some items are no longer available or they are not something I want to do just yet. But I save what I find and it will be a good record to have on hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Don't get me wrong, I love vintage, but I also love our modern cons and technology. Without the latter, I wouldn't be able to research and save what I find. It would also mean long trips to the library. I think eating and living like our older generations once did makes sense in these times of uncertainty we seem to be in, but it is also wise to balance our technology with theirs too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I hope everyone is having a good day or evening where ever you are.</div>

</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VnIluv8Qsec/XCs0rW139_I/AAAAAAAAGYE/SkKJZFl1jVcDbm4RQ2EjqoUloJ_aFYvgACLcBGAs/s1600/homely.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="583" data-original-width="478" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VnIluv8Qsec/XCs0rW139_I/AAAAAAAAGYE/SkKJZFl1jVcDbm4RQ2EjqoUloJ_aFYvgACLcBGAs/s1600/homely.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As the new year comes in for 2019, I'm heading back in time to 1939. Last year I did a lot of research and saved many of the articles I found for this time. This year will be putting much of what I found in the research into proper use as I only just touched on the subject towards the end of last year. Now it is a new year, I'll start with the articles from January. The article above is what housewives could buy for themselves in the summer sales after Christmas. It is an interesting look in what was available to buy for the home at the time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-97JJ44kBco0/XCszXrUYcoI/AAAAAAAAGXQ/NcwFptuEEN81rQTiO77AWCnpJSa-SLmgACLcBGAs/s1600/homelya.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-97JJ44kBco0/XCszXrUYcoI/AAAAAAAAGXQ/NcwFptuEEN81rQTiO77AWCnpJSa-SLmgACLcBGAs/s1600/homelya.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
With Christmas over, the January articles give recipes for using up leftovers. We had traditional meat for Christmas this year and my favourite used a vintage recipe with pineapples and ham. I kept the ham bone to use it in a recipe for ham soup.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MsUVAAxbjIY/XCszXklIxDI/AAAAAAAAGXY/aRIrFl5UNmQ1a8yg--P5gnlKgUc_vDMtACLcBGAs/s1600/homelyb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MsUVAAxbjIY/XCszXklIxDI/AAAAAAAAGXY/aRIrFl5UNmQ1a8yg--P5gnlKgUc_vDMtACLcBGAs/s1600/homelyb.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm continuing to build up the garden patch. I'm following the planting guides for 1939 and I have a few things planted out now. So far the heat, along with the wild storms we have had; hasn't done too much damage and everything is growing well. The growing guides encourage planting flowers, they obviously had seperate gardens for these. I have a small garden space so the flowers I have are mixed in with the veggies and in pots.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yoCPscJQ2Ws/XCszY8VlAdI/AAAAAAAAGXc/MdnhtHk2CPoqSYgbVtA7cPywKtsNhUR2wCLcBGAs/s1600/homelyc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yoCPscJQ2Ws/XCszY8VlAdI/AAAAAAAAGXc/MdnhtHk2CPoqSYgbVtA7cPywKtsNhUR2wCLcBGAs/s1600/homelyc.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
By following 1939 it means slowing down with home chores. They did have vacuum cleaners and washing machines but washing up was still done by hand in many homes. I now wash up by hand instead of using the dishwasher.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mDTIQQc2NYs/XCszZK5F5II/AAAAAAAAGXg/UjZIScU4o64nvsPlDESiYI8GU2Kb0RDcACLcBGAs/s1600/homelyd.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mDTIQQc2NYs/XCszZK5F5II/AAAAAAAAGXg/UjZIScU4o64nvsPlDESiYI8GU2Kb0RDcACLcBGAs/s1600/homelyd.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The meal time recipes for January call for salads and using up the salads available in the home garden. The recipes are obviously very seasonal for our hot weather. The main recipes are mostly for salad dressings and ways to add fruit to salads such as oranges.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SWykB7rGBrk/XCszZZvj-AI/AAAAAAAAGXk/aVt81Wb9uBEhiEs3mHSI9G3r9kZer4KawCLcBGAs/s1600/homelye.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SWykB7rGBrk/XCszZZvj-AI/AAAAAAAAGXk/aVt81Wb9uBEhiEs3mHSI9G3r9kZer4KawCLcBGAs/s1600/homelye.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In the beauty sections, soaps such as Lux and Palmolive show up in advertisements. Vaseline is encouraged for all uses and cold creams for skin care is being recommend, Ponds is advertised regularly. I have Nivea which was available at the time. Yardley isn't advertised until late in the year when war was announced and advertisements were encouraging to buy British. I received a bottle for Christmas and I will buy more as I like the scent which is Lilly of the Valley.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I think it will be an interesting year living during 1939 and recreating the home life ways of the time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For now, I wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope the year will be happy and bright for you all.</div>
<br />
